What You Need to Know About Counselling and Psychology

If you are looking for mental health support, you may wonder whether you should see a psychologist or a counsellor. These are two different professions that have some similarities and some differences. In this blog post, we will explain the main difference between psychologist and counsellor and help you decide which one is right for you.

Psychologists can diagnose and treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, etc. They use evidence-based methods to help their clients cope with their problems and improve their quality of life. Psychologists have a minimum of six years of university study and supervised experience, and they must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia.

Counsellors are trained in listening and helping people understand their own thoughts and feelings. They can help their clients with issues such as stress, anger, grief, relationship problems, career choices, etc. They do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, but they can provide support and guidance to people with mild to moderate symptoms. Counsellors use a person-centred approach that focuses on the client’s goals and needs. Counsellors may have different levels of education and training, depending on their area of specialisation.

The main difference between psychologist and counsellor is that psychologists tend to work more with people with complex mental illnesses when compared to counsellors. However, both professions can offer valuable help to people who are struggling with their mental health or life challenges. The best way to choose between them is to consider your situation, your preferences, and your budget. You can also consult your GP or a mental health helpline for advice and referrals.

If you have a diagnosed mental health condition or you suspect you may have one, you may benefit from seeing a psychologist who can provide a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan. If you have a less severe or specific problem that you want to talk about and find solutions for, you may prefer seeing a counsellor who can offer a supportive and collaborative space. Of course, these are not strict rules, and you may find that either a psychologist or a counsellor can help you with your situation.

Remember that seeking help for your mental health is a sign of strength and courage. Whether you choose a psychologist or a counsellor, you are taking a positive step towards improving your wellbeing.
