What is counselling

Counselling is a process of helping people who are facing various challenges in their lives, such as stress, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship issues, addiction, etc. Counselling provides a safe and confidential space for people to explore their thoughts and feelings, gain insight and understanding, and find solutions and coping strategies. Counselling can be beneficial for anyone who wants to improve their mental health and well-being, or who wants to make positive changes in their life. Counselling can help people to:

  • Identify and clarify their goals and values
  • Enhance their self-esteem and confidence
  • Develop their emotional intelligence and resilience
  • Learn new skills and techniques to manage stress and emotions
  • Communicate more effectively and assertively
  • Overcome fears and phobias
  • Resolve conflicts and improve relationships
  • Heal from past wounds and traumas
  • Break free from negative patterns and habits
  • Find meaning and purpose in life

Counselling is not a one-size-fits-all approach. There are different types of counselling, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), person-centred therapy (PCT), psychodynamic therapy (PDT), solution-focused therapy (SFT), etc. Each type of counselling has its own principles and methods, but they all share some common elements, such as:

  • A collaborative and respectful relationship between the counsellor and the client
  • A focus on the client’s strengths and resources
  • A holistic view of the client’s situation and needs
  • A flexible and adaptable style of working
  • A commitment to ethical standards and confidentiality
